Kigali , on 26 th to 27 th August 2010.
THEME
Environmental Health promotion to achieve Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development.
Introduction
The Primary Health Care concept among other elements covers promotion of water and sanitation, breast feeding and proper nutrition . The Nutrition Summit organized by the Ministry of Health November 2009, with UNICEF support aimed at raising the profile of nutrition as a foundation of sustainable development while a national campaign for the promotion of hygiene was launched on 19 th July 2010. Kigali Health Institute in collaboration with the Environmental Health Desk of Ministry of Health with the financial support from the British Council through the DelPHE project is organizing the conference to underscore the contribution of environmental health promotion in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development both in Rwanda and the Region.
Why environmental health?
The underlying causes to most of the health problems suffered in Rwanda and indeed other developing countries are related to the unhygienic conditions of sanitary facilities, poor management of both liquid and solid wastes, non washing of hands with clean water and soap, poor food hygiene and other unhygienic practices. While these sound simple and day to day practices; non compliance to hygienic practices for example directly influences prevalence of malnutrition especially among children.
