Open Day
On 28 th May 2010, Kigali Health Institute held the Open Day. This event was largely attended by the public in every corner of Kigali City and in its outskirts. Some of KHI partners and stakeholders attended this important event. The event was well prepared because every department in KHI graced the event and was ready to exhibit to the public what it offers to the community. TIGO telecommunication company too entertained the participants and the show was marvelous.
The Registrar office was the first to present. In their presentation, they explained to the students from secondary schools who were present the faculties and departments that are in KHI, and the requirements to be admitted in those departments. Two secondary schools that were represented include Lycée Notre Damme de Cîteaux and Lycée de Kigali.
During this event, departments at khi offered free consulting services to the people. In the ophthalmology department where a number of people visited offered the ophthalmologic services. The people who benefited these services hailed KHI for having prepared this function. They requested that it should happen twice year because KHI has a lot to show and to serve Rwandan community in the health sector.
In mental health department, they diagnosed the mental health disorders for the clients who consulted them. They also lectured on how people with neurological disorders can be regenerated in the society by involving them in occupational activities.
The students and staff of The General Nursing and physiotherapy Departments checked the body mass and cardio vascular fitness. Those who checked themselves got the information about their nutrition status and the diet they have to take to avoid the risks.
During that day, the KHI Dental Department gave a lecture on oral health. In partnership with COLGATE PALMOLIVE, the department gave their clients a free Colgate cavity, PROTEX soap and a free tooth brush. The stand of dental department was among the stands that were crowded with people who wanted to access the services and the information.
In Medical Imaging Sciences, they presented Ultra Sound Machine, a tool that help them carrying out experiments while dealing with surgical operations. A team of students and staff of that department gave detailed information of what the department does, something that thrilled the participants.
In Bio Medical Laboratory department, they screened participants. In their screening, they dealt with Blood Group and Intestine worms.
The department of Environmental Health gave various ways of keeping oneself against the diseases. Their focus was centered on the theme “prevention is better than cure”. They also presented various fumigation apparatus they use in driving away mosquitoes and other bugs that can harm the health of an individual.
The Anesthesia department displayed various ways of how they deliver first aid services using their skills in anesthesia and reanimation.
The Midwifery department presented to their clients how the baby develops in its mother's womb. They also explained thoroughly the family planning methods mainly the Standard Days Method.
Let us remind that the open day is a yearly activity aimed at outreaching the public and let them access some of KHI services. It is also a means of promoting KHI activities, and also getting different reactions and appraisals concerning KHI performance to the beneficiaries.
Currently KHI has opened other services which include Community Eye Clinic, Antenatal Consultation, Mother to Child Health services (MCH) and Psychotherapy clinic. The newly established services operate at Kiyovu opposite St. Famille Catholique Church. These services are additional to dental clinic, Center for Continuing for Education (CEFOCK) and a Laboratory.
