KHI DELEGATION VISITED
ST. ELISABETH UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
From the 23 rd April to 28 th April 2010, a delegation from Kigali Health Institute visited the Republic of Slovakia mainly in St Elisabeth University of Health and Social Sciences. Dr. NDUSHABANDI Desire , the Rector of KHI and SEMINEGA Silas Eugene , the Legal Advisor at KHI toured different parts of St. Elisabeth University premises and held dialogues with top university officials and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Slovakia Republic.
During this visit, the Rector of KHI presented a documentary DVD about the institute's history, faculties and achievements. The Rector also held a conference with doctors and students who are coming to work in Kibuye Hospital under the Bay View Group social program in May.
KHI delegation held talks with the Rector of St. Elizabeth university of Health and Social sciences. In their exchange, they explored on opportunities of future cooperation between the two varsities. The rector also held a conversation with the Slovak Republic Medical Chamber President, Prof. Dr. MILAN Dragula and his advisor Dr. VRADIMIR Balogh . Their exchange centered on Slovak doctors who are going to work in Rwanda and the required payments of their stay in Kibuye Hospital.
The delegation toured the National Council of the Slovak Republic (Parliament). They were formally welcomed by the Vice chairman of the Parliament , Mr. MILOSLAV Ciz. The Vice Chairman of the Chamber expressed his interest to establish the cooperation between the parliament of Slovak Republic and Rwanda.
KHI and St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Sciences signed a memorandum of understanding and the cooperation has been reached in the following areas:
Education and Medical cooperation
A cooperation agreement was signed between KHI and St. Elizabeth of Health and Social Sciences together with Scranton University and Bay View Group o.z. The agreement provides an exchange of doctors, teachers and students. The Slovak Medical Chamber proposed to establish cooperation with Rwanda Medical Council in various potential services and operations.
Additional Educational Opportunities
GEOLOGY
Prof. DYDA revealed that the Faculty of Geology at Bratislava is opening a Geology Faculty in Rwanda to deliver courses for 15 students beginning next semester. It was noted that a meeting with the ministry of mines and forestry should be important. Also, both sides discussed about finding the space for the faculty to operate at KHI Nyamishaba. Bay View Group will arrange support for Prof DYDA and other geology lecturers.
FORESTRY
The Czech Forestry Faculty has expressed an interest to provide lecturers in Forestry program and the faculty is interested in Rwanda Reforestation program. They discussed about the space for the faculty at Nyamishaba and Bay View Group promised their support in arranging the lecturers.
TOURISM
The Slovak University School of Economics, Department of Tourism is interested to start cooperation with Rwandan University in the domain of tourism.
HUMANITARIAN COOPERATION
Bay View Group together with St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Sciences plan to open a clinic in Bisesero. St. Elizabeth University will provide doctors and social workers to help the local population. The first cohort of doctors arrived in November 2009 and a second is expected to arrive in May 2010. Discussion on how KHI can assist medical doctors from Slovakia to get permission of working in Rwanda from Rwanda Medical Council. Once agreed, these doctors will at the same time teach KHI Nyamishaba.
The delegation from KHI also discussed with the Slovakians on how cooperation can be widened not only in the domain of health and academics but also in the domain of politics, economics, energy, water and hydroelectric project management and in the area of investment. The Slovakian investors want to invest in farm and construction machinery production, pharmaceuticals production, transport, chemicals (fertilizers) and paper industry.
